Students learn more and achieve at higher levels when they go to schools that are safe, in good repair, and not overcrowded.

The Department of Education has made a major commitment to improve school facilities. Between 2002 and 2006, we added 53,781 new seats. The current five year Capital Plan allocates $4.5 billion to build 105 new buildings to increase the school system’s capacity by 63,000 seats, $3.7 billion to restructure schools in a manner that is aligned with educational priorities, and $5.3 billion in necessary building upgrades. It is the largest school Capital Plan in the City’s history and totals $13.1 billion.

The School Construction Authority (SCA) builds new public schools and manages the upgrades and renovations of large capital construction projects.
