Students at PS 101 in Brooklyn dance for a cause
China is more than 6,000 miles away—but when a major earthquake killed tens of thousands of people and left 5 million people homeless, students at PS 101 in Brooklyn pitched in to help.
Through sales of CDs of its student dance festival and other donations, the PS 101 community raised nearly $1,400 to send to victims of the China earthquake. Students sent the money they raised to a charity organization, Global Giving, to help rebuild the schools destroyed in the natural disaster.
“We make it a point to be aware of global concerns,” PS 101 principal Gregg Korrol said. “We do this both for the point of keeping our students aware of current events, as well as teaching them that they have the power to help.”
Korrol said parents should be thanked for their role in this effort—and for helping teach students how to come to the aid of other students, even those who live on the other side of the world.
“Thank you for helping us help our students gain global awareness and understand that even in the smallest way, we can all make a difference,” he said.
